When I'm reading a newsgroup in OE 2002, if I want to get fresh messages, I
have to

Tool, Synchronize Newsgroup, then say OK to the options checked there (which
are get new headers only for me).

I'd love to set up something so that hitting F9 or whatever would
synchronize the newsgroup I'm currently reading. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance.

This newsgroup is for support of Outlook 97, 98, 2000, 2002 & 2003 from the
Office family for Windows PCs. For Outlook Express (OE) support try posting
in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.outlookexpress for OE 4.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.mail.mac for the Macintosh version of OE

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

Also a good source of Outlook Express info can be found here:

Outlook Express *is* the news reader of Outlook 2002 - there is no other.
Consider the question asked about reading newsgroups from Outlook.

Outlook Express *is* the client program, NOT Outlook! Repost your
inquiry in a newsgroup for the client that is actually performing the
function, and that's Outlook EXPRESS.

Outlook is a PIM (personal information manager) with e-mail. It has no
NNTP support (network news transfer protocol). It will call a separate
and disconnected program to provide NNTP support (which is OE by default
but, I believe, you can install a different newsreader and configure
that one to be the default newsreader that gets opened by a call in
Outlook to whatever is then designated the NNTP client).

By your own logic, Outlook Express *is* the news reader of Windows
<whatever version> but asking in a Windows newsgroup would also be
inappropriate (and get you the same response as here). You were
informed "not here, go there" but if you chose to not "go there" then do
so and deal with your problem by yourself.
