I would like to make reference to the same foot note more than once on the
same page of a document.

Hi soozi,

Insert|Cross-Reference > Footnote

You might also want to format the resulting cross-reference with the 'Footnote Reference' Style.

If you use Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to Footnote and select
"Footnote number, formatted," the formatting is applied for you.

Hi Suzanne,

That must be in a later version than Office 2000, upon which I based my response.

Office 2000 doesn't have the "Footnote number, formatted" option? Yes, the
command path is different (longer) in Word 2002 and 2003 (and of course
completely different in Word 2007)

Ah <lights>, I'd never noticed that before! That'll save me a bit of work, I'm sure - I've been doing a fair bit of footnote
cross-referencing lately.
