It does not exist on my Win XP Pro system.

None of the Policy keys/values exist by default. You actually need to create
subkeys/values upto that level.

Question: How To: Reduce the number of items shown on listed on the "My
Recent Documents" pane?

I have tried the following solution but was not successful. I could not
locate the reg key listed below. It does not exist on my Win XP Pro system. I
know the max value is 15 items but how can i reduce that to say 4, 5 or any
number less than 15?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and modify the MaxRecentDocs value.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt
Version\Policies\Explorer

"MaxRecentDocs"=dword:00000019

Or download the edit on line 210, open it via Notepad and change the dword
value, then merge.

So how many maximum documents do you want to see at a time? The "19" value
is hexadecimal so that is 25 items in the list. That's a long list. Did
you reboot so the change actually got effected?

So just where did you find the above KB article? I found
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=292504 but it doesn't anything close to
your copy. If a data item (with its value) is not defined then the default
gets used. That means YOU have to *create* the registry key or data item to
change from using the default. Read
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/828/ and note it says to
CREATE a new value (under the assumption that it won't be there because the
setup assumes the default value will be used).

Are you logging onto a domain? If so, have you asked your IT dept. if the
policy they push onto your domain login will change this value? It is,
after all, a *policies* setting.

Darn, and I thought you were just that good - responding 40 minutes before
the question was even asked! For a moment I thought you got your crystal
ball back from the shop.
