I have a serious situation here, the copy of internet
explorer 6 on windows xp that is on my computer has been
hijacked by a trojan horse virus that norton antivirus
failed to detect and even after the virus is removed
whenever I try to run internet explorer I get several
windows for a spam site and the virus is downloaded again
whenever I access msn.com or use the google search
engine. Is there a way to fix this without reformating
and reinstalling windows xp?

Yes. This can probably be fixed easily. You probably have been browser
hijacked but not by a "Trojan," a virus, or a blended threat--it's probably
a type of "spyware, considerably less harmful to your system. If you run
Norton or another Antivirus and it ID's something, even if it let it in,
that's another matter.

1) Download and run Adaware. Make sure to use the latest reference base by
clicking on the globe on the toolbar.

2) Download and run Patrick Kola's Spybot Search and Destroy:

3) Download and run Hijack This!

4) To prevent this situation in the first place, i.e. most Adware, Spyware,
and Hijackware, download:

SpywareBlaster
