Running Win XP. I encrypted some data in just a couple
folders. Months later I do a fresh install, but saved
those encrypted folders on another drive. Now of course I
can't access them anymore. Even if I go into
the "Details" under the encryption adding a new users, it
gives me an "error 5" I see my "certificate" is "not
trusted". Trying to access them directly gives me
an "access is denied"

Is there any way to revover this encrypted data??

do you have your old profile still on your machine? If so, Microsoft
product support services might be able to help you if you open a support
incident with them.

hi Glenn,
I too in the same boat with you.
I have around 3 GB of encrypted data right now in the disk. I am worrying
about my settings too.

I remember I read something about data recovery agents or so something under
the XP help.

Can somebody recommend a good precautionary steps?

Glenn;
Are you sure it is not an Ownership issue:

If the files are encrypted.
If you did not back-up the encryption key or the Recovery Agent and
are not on a domain, the files are as good as gone.
This must be accomplished while you have access to the files.
If you have not already done so, it is now to late.

If you can restore the original profile (not recreate) you may be able
to recover the data.
Recreating profiles and passwords is irrelevant.
Contact Microsoft if you can restore the profile.
Or:
http://www.beginningtoseethelight.org/efsrecovery/index.php

EFS is very good at what it does and there is no back door.
Read and understand these links before using EFS to keep from
permanently losing your data:

When you say old profile, I have the user {GG-XXXXx}
which was the profile I had when I set up the encryption
at first. It also has the numbers of that
persons "certificate" still there. In fact it won't even
let me delete it. If I try and add another user to see
this encrypted data, I get "error 5"
