hi all,

i have a 40gb drive on which i have installed a win98SE
and win2k. recently due to some virus attack something on
the mbr has gone wrong. no matter how many time i try to
format the partition on which win2k is installed(on
fat32), its formatting my other partition on which win98SE
is installed. if i run partition magic software, it says
the boot table is corrupt. im in trouble because i have a
lot of data and i cannot afford to loose it. is there any
way to detect what is wrong/repair and back up the data at
the same time.

thank you in advance.

Assuming you created the partitions in PM, you created the recovery disk?
Doesnt PM have an option to repair the boot table? - Its a while since I
used it.
If you can boot into win98se, safe mode if neccessary, cannot you
copy/backup yr data from there?
Finally if win2k partition is fat32 you should be able to boot from a boot
disk and move/recover yr data from there.

When data recovery is a priority, stop 'messing' with that disk. Get another
disk and install Windows there. From there assess the damage on your
original disk. Preferably data is recovered with a read-only tool intially.
When you have done so, repair attempts can be done, or start from scratch
immediately (repartition/reformat etc.).

Have you tried fixmbr in the dos utilities? Does it even
exist, I mean in Win2k repair there is a fixboot and a
fixmbr. RG
