How to re-install vital os file msvcp60.dll

Managed to delete os file msvcp60.dll from system32 directory on HP box
running XP home. But system still booted. Thought installing SP2 might
re-install this file. SP2 installed without trouble but the file is still
missing and now the machine will not boot, even in safe mode. "services.exe"
complains it cannot find the missing file.

Any thoughts on recovering the situation without a complete re-install of
Win XP? Can I create a boot floppy on another XP m/c so I could simply copy
the file of the original XP CDROM?

Do a deep search for it on your drive, you should find it in
"C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386"
If so, copy & paste into "C:\WINDOWS\system32"

Failing that, download & run Vs6sp6.exe from http://tinyurl.com/2qdk4
 
Hi,

Start/run msconfig, click on "expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: msvcp60.dll
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. This assumes a default installation to C:\Windows.
If your installation is in a different folder, such as C:\Winnt, change the
"To" path accordingly. Reboot when finished.
