How to put XP Home on *both* of my home computers?

I recently just purchased Windows XP Home Edition and it is
running fine on my new computer. The problem is I want to
install it as well on my backup computer (which I have
networked to my newer one and internet routed to it). I
have heard you can only install XP on one computer and I
understand the piracy reasons but I should be able to buy
one copy of Windows and put it on both of my systems at
home.

Do I have to contact Microsoft for a new registration key
or something? How do I resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance, Kaiber

Windows XP requires a separate license (Product Key) for each
installation on a different computer. Otherwise, Product Activation
will fail on the second computer installation. So, you need to purchase
a new license (Product Key) for another installation.

Read your Windows XP End-User License Agreement:

Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

It clearly states that you may only install one (1) copy
of Windows XP on just one (1) computer. You will
need a new license (Product Key) for each new
installation on a different computer.

Also, open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and click on "Questions and Answers about the
End User License Agreement".

You still can install in your second machine and use it
for 30 days, than after that you can call microsoft and
tell them you need key for that one in thelephone and they
will assign you a new key #. Hope this help.

Thanks

Not to mention giving those that really do need to
reactivate for legitimate reasons a bad name.

If your computer were a living organism, then its operating system is its
brain. If you amputate an organism's head it dies.
Each computer needs an individual, licensed copy of Windows (any version)
in order to comply with licensing requirements. Therefore for your two
computers, you need two licenses of Windows. You can either buy a second
copy of the product, or use Microsoft's shopping site
(http://shop.microsoft.com) to purchase just the license for the second
computer at a slight discount.
This is not a new policy, but Product Activation has merely allowed
Microsoft to actually enforce its existing policy more effectively.
