I got 3 machines connected to a network with a switch. How do I
protect these machines shared folders from a 4th computer connected to
the network. Is there a password or something else that I can set up
in order to prevent the access to the shared files and folders.

Which version of Windows XP are you using? Windows XP
Home and Pro both have Simple File Sharing which doesn't
have any security. When a disk a shared, there are no
permissions or passwords and everyone can access it.

You can enable and disable Simple File Sharing in XP Pro,
it's located under the Folder Properties. Simple File
Sharing is enabled by default in XP Pro, but the Pro
version of Windows XP has much better way of controlling
file sharing with Access Control List.

Unfortunately I am using XP home edition. The problem is exactly this
: I use the file sharing. What I do not understand is that when I set
up my microsoft network using the network wizard I thought that only
those machines that logged on the network would have access to the
shared files. Instead any machine connected to one of the port of the
switch can see the shared files.
