How to profile my scanner?

It is my understanding that profiling all your devices is critical to
have a managable color management workflow. What exactly does one need
to profile a Nikon Coolscan 5000? I have not bought any calibration or
profiling hardware, such as what ColorFision and EYE-ONE color sells.

Will the advanced monitor calibration/profiling package from both of
these companies provide me with what I need, other then a calibrated
peice of film to stick into the scanner? If not, what else do I need?
In either case, where do I get the calibrated piece of film to stick
into the scanner? I use Kodak film, normally.

Profiling software such as Colorvision or Monaco is really what you need.

If you are using slide film, you buy a Kodak IT8 target for your film size.
Both of those software packages come with a target that
is suitable for a flat bed scanner (it is 4x5). Many many photo stores sell
the Kodak IT8 targets for E6 film. You will need to download
the correct text file from Kodak for your target. This file describes the
LAB colors one sees on the target.

Kodak does not make targets for their color negative films. Various other
people do, usually by making a photograph of an E6 target.

So what is the difference in all the different flavors of Monaco?

Man, I did not look into prices the first time. Is my impression
correct that the software alone is going to cost more then US$1000?

Sam,
For profiling your scanner you need an IT8.7 target. Look at
http://www.targets.coloraid.de/
There are no targets to profile a scanner for negativ film,
just for slides and reflective.

Next you need a profiling software. There are different solutions;
VueScan, lcms-profiling tool, monaco systems, gretagmacbeth,....
I use VueScan, the lcms-profiling tool, the targets made by Wolf Faust
and the profiling tool Profile Mechanic scanner and monitor made by
digital light & color http://www.dl-c.com
