I have a 3Com 4900 SM Layer3 swtich and want to do inter-vlan routing,
how is this done? Specifically I only want to activate this to have
anyone from either vlan1 or vlan2 to have access to a printer through
routing. I am not very experienced but seem to think this may be done
with access control lists, although I have no experience in this. Can
someone guide me?

I have 2 ip domains.
Vlan1 10.10.x.x subnet mask 255.255.248.0 (local network, very high
security)
Vlan2 192.168.x.x subnet mask 255.255.255.128 (internet network

Printer 10.10.5.5 subnet mask 255.255.248.0

Thanks in advance for any help.

It can be done very easily. But if you have no experience in this at all as
you have said, I think you should get someone with experience to help. It
goes way beyond a what a reply in a newsgroup post can offer. You'll need to
create IP Interfaces on each VLAN, and set up routing between the network
segments. You can limit the routing with access lists, or by defining a
limited route based on the subnet mask, depending on how your computers are
configured for default gateways and what the limitations of the default
gateway router is.

I guess your right. Although I really think this would be a fine
solution for sharing a printer and saving costs. I keep reading on ip
routing and it seems like it makes sense but without the practice and
step by step how and why, this seems farther to becaome a reality. I
know how to setup gateways for both networks but have not done it just
because of the fact I don't know how to secure with ACL. I guess its
all about security.
Thanks.
