How to Print on Oversize Paper

I created a document designed to print on a single 8-1/2" x 11" sheet in
portrait layout. However, now I'd like to blow it up to take to a local
copy service to print on 11" x 17". Using Page setup, I reset the paper
dimensions to 11" x 17". But my home printer can only do 8-1/2" wide paper,
so I get a message to that effect, with an option to "fix" the margins. I
click "fix" and still end up with a document 8-1/2" wide (although 17"
long).

How can I modify the file to avoid this limitation? I assume that once the
margins are fixed, I'd just increase the font sizes appropriately.

Install and select a printer that is capable of printing to 11" x 17".
Format the document for that printer.

Unfortunately, you can only assign a document to print on
the size paper that your printer will accept. I have had
this issue at work before. I thought I was sending a
document to a printer that prints tabloid (11x17) paper,
but was actually sending it to an HP 4200 series printer
that does not have this capability.

I know that this is not the best alternative, but you can
utilize the Poster print option in the Properties area for
your printer. For my HP 5100, I have the option under
the "Finishing" tab to choose poster printing for either
2x2 pages (sheets 4), 3x3 (9 sheets), 4x4 (16 sheets), 5x5
(25 sheets). This will require assembling the poster, but
that is not hard to do. (I tried to attach a print screen
here, but it did not work - sorry.)

Another option is to save the document to a disk, take it
to a printer (Kinko's, office store) and make the size
adjustment on their PC that is set to a tabloid size
printer.

Hope this information helps.

Is it convenient or even possible to install a printer that is not phsically
present? Can i just download a driver for such a printer from the HP or
Epson website for example, and then install it and create word files using
it as a default?

Assuming I can, would such a file print properly on any other printer which
handles 11 x 17 paper?

Yes, you can install printer drivers for printers that are not present. You
would want to find out from your printshop what printer they would use
there. Then take the file in on a floppy or CD. Depending on your version of
Windows, a driver for your printer may already be available on your
computer, just not installed.

Note, do not save the file to the floppy or CD from Word directly. Save to
your hard drive and then use Windows to copy it.

Your best bet is to install the driver for the printer you will ultimately
be printing to. That way you can be sure that your document will print the
way you see it. If you don't find a Windows driver for it, then yes,
download the driver from the manufacturer's Web site.
