Even after going through all options and unchecking
everything that seemed to be possibly making AntiSpyware
run at Windows startup, it still does. The entry in the
registry is ...\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe. Anyone
knows how to disable this the right way, ie without
removing the key from the registry manually?

I think the best way to prevent it from running at start up is by click
start > Run > type in "msconfig" without quotes, click that the startup tab

Yes, that's a definitive way. But I wonder if there is any
way through AntiSpyware software to do this? It seems
abnormal to me that a software that I choose to install
doesn't let me the choice to run it or not...

Microsoft has a recommended way to do this--see the workaround section of
this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892375 End users may be prompted to allow or
block administrative actions that originate from a central management tool
after they install Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on a computer that is managed
by Systems Management Server 2003

This involves registry editing, I'm afraid. I agree that this isn't
optimal, and I hope that the final product will allow for an easier way to
accomplish this.

Can you say more about why you don't want the real-time protection running?

There are UI choices to disable real-time protection. However, they don't
remove the shellexecute hook. This hook itself appears to be related to
some performance issues on some machines. You can't remove or replace this
hook without a reboot, which is part of the difficulty I suspect.
