I HAVE A FORM THAT CALLS FOR A DATE TO BE TYPED. WHEN I TYPE THE DATE OR
OTHER CHARACTER MY LINE SEPARATES, HOW DO I PREVENT THE LINE FROM SEPARATING?

Use a table cell with a bottom border. Or see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm and especially the
forms tutorials by Dian Chapman that this article links to.

Maybe because your caps lock is stuck?

Sounds like the form has not been set up as a form. Just an underline to show
where to insert. Try switching on the OVR overtype and also use the underline
when typing the date. Does this work for you?
