I'm trying to improve the performance of my PC so I tried
defragmentig the hard drive, but I receive a message
asking me to do a scandisk first. I have Windows XP
operating system and I have no idea to do that

Defragmenting is your first step to improve the performance of your
computer. Scandisk has been replaced in Windows XP by what is known as Disk
Error Checking, or chkdsk in geek-speak. To access Disk Error Checking, open
My Computer and right-click on the drive you want to check for errors.
Select Properties and then select the Tools tab. The first button is Error
Checking.

Error Checking performs two types of test: You can check your file system
for logical errors (known as chkdsk /f) and you can check the surface of
your hard disk for physical problems (known as chkdsk /r). In order to check
your system drive (the one containing Windows) for logical errors, you will
have to restart your computer.
