How to perform low level control of Digital Still Cameras

I've had good luck using WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) with many
digital devices just to snap a photo. I would like to control lower
level features like focus, zoom, and exposure remotely too. Can this
be done? How do I do it or where can I find out how to do it? Thanks.
 
Minolta A1 and A2 camera did this very well, but you need to install their
software for such control. These cameras are no longer available. You may
find some on eBay but make sure to get the capture software needed for such.
Some Canon models will allow you to do this but I don't remember which
models and I don't remember if you need to purchase the software separately.
Check with Canon.

I have a Minolta A1 and the software to drive it via my computer and I
really like to do this but I can't really help further than telling you to
check the Canon site. Minolta was purchased by Sony, maybe Sony will have
this on their new camera but I would check Canon first at this time.
Yes there was some "secret" (or what we can call "not exactly legal but
still OK if I use it and don't distribute it) stuff. You know what I mean.

I am wondering if there are some "secret" WIA Device.Parameters the
could be changed or if there "secret" device,commands that might
work? I am using a Canon Powershot S2 IS, a Labtec web cam and an
Epson scanner. There available low level software seems to be the
standard WIA interface code. Any further thoughts? Is there another
user's group that might have members that have special skills in this
area? Thanks for your help. Steve
