how to pause a running program and resume later?

I have a video encoding program running on my PC but I need it to pause for
a while so I can burn a DVD. I don't want to kill the encoding program
because it takes many hours to finish and it is now half way through.

Already, the priority of the encoding program is set to low, but it is still
hogging the CPU causing the DVD to burn very slowing.

I don't see any way to pause a program in the task manager. Any ideas?
