Not using anything built into excel.

This is more of an operating system question.

If you're using windows, you may want to post to a windows newsgroup. Include
the version of windows you're running, how you're logged on (as an admin or as a
user) and where the folder resides (network share or local folder).

It's an FAQ in the Windows newsgroups, and the answer is "No, you
cannot password a folder."

Thanks for the info.

Maybe the OP can use a zip file and password protect that instead???

Yes, that's what I'd do. The recommendation in the XP groups is to
set file permissions, but frankly I don't understand that, and I'm
not sure it's even possible with XP Home.

From the "Ownership KB Article";

" If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start
the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has
Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab."
