How to OVERscore characters?

I need to OVERscore (not underscore) some characters -- that is, place a
horizontal line ABOVE those characters, instead of underneath. This is
to indicate negative signals in electronic circuits.

Is this possible in Word 97, and/or are there any utilities that will
let me do this?

Suzanne

I just want to sincerely thank you for your custom of replying as a top
post.

It is of course politically correct to bottom post but personally, I just
hate scrolling through reams of what someone has previously said, just to
see the latest response, so when a thread gets bigger than one screen, I
can't be bothered (and haven't the time) to scroll down it. In contrast,
your custom enables me to instantly see the state of play. Save heaps of
time, so thank you!

That's my feeling as well, and top-posting (despite the fact that, yes, it's
illogical) used to be pretty much the norm when these NGs were hosted by
Microsoft. Now they're probably more subject to standards set elsewhere
around Usenet. There's also considerable difference of opinion (sometimes
vehemently expressed) about snipping quotes. Since I read NGs in Hide Read
Messages view, it's helpful to me to have the entire thread quoted so I can
look back and see the history of it, but I do understand that, for people
reading on smartphones and the like, this would be an issue.

Oh Dear!...

While I also thank Suzanne for her genius with Word, and helping all us
lesser mortals with our Word difficulties... Thank you Suzanne.
The rest is a sad reflection of what happened to the net in the late 90s
and on. (There was a phrase for it).

I guess you also drive on any side of the road you fancy, despite what
was/is considered the norm... just because you want to.

I guess you drop litter everywhere, just because you want to, despite it
being considered anti-social...

Expectorate etc, etc...

This appalling state of affairs reached a new height recently when I
logged in to my bank account to find the (Self abusers) had decided the
statement items were to be presented in reverse order. (Last transaction
at the top, oldest at the bottom. I with many others protested, and a
while later, a mysterious button appeared allowing us to reverse the order
back to the expected normal.

Now if we lived in another part of the world where they read/wrote bottom
to top, right to left or even in a damn circle... Well maybe that's an
excuse, but as probably 95 percent of the folks I read/write use the
traditional Western method, upside down is not acceptable.

In some net places I inhabit, the top posting crime can get you firstly,
severely chastised, and then possibly thrown out by a moderator.

FWIW, I prefer top-posting as well. Originally, I probably started top-posting because it was the default in Outlook Express. Similarly, I suspect that most posters do whatever is the default in their newsreaders (or whatever interface they use to access the groups).

Exactly. I'm still using OE, and I'd have to go to a lot more trouble NOT to
top-post. But I have learned to use an entirely different style when posting
to the forums.

Indeed, in the forums, we are slowly getting used to not quoting text at all. I still find it necessary to quote the message I'm replying to if there are many messages.

Obviously, a message in a forum can never be entirely without context, since the web page includes them all (well, large threads display ten messages per page).

It really isn't necessary to quote (most of the time) because, if you click
on the line that says "Reply to so-and-so on such-and-such date," the entire
post to which you're replying is displayed. Quoting is necessary if you want
to reply to just a specific portion of the post or to reply inline (which
can be done with considerable ingenuity).

Now, that's useful. Thanks!

I hadn't noticed that the "in reply to <name and date>" was hyperlinked.

I think I discovered it by accident. I'm not sure how it could be made more
obvious.

It does display in blue like the other links, but that obviously doesn't help.... :-)

I tried that. Ctrl-End takes me right away from the thread to the last
diplayed thread! (I'm not important, but I'm darnd busy...)

My apologies for that post, Square Peg

It's just that I didn't expect a falme (well, perhaps it's better called a
flicker) on this particular newsgroup, so I responded! Most unworthy of the
group. Apologies to all.
