When launching power point- how can I get it to go right
into Slide View instead of normal view?

By saving the file as a PPS (PowerPoint Show) the user can open the file as
a show by double clicking on the icon. If the user open PowerPoint first,
then the PPS file it will still open in "normal" mode.

A PPS file is the same as a PPT file, but the different file extension tells
PowerPoint you want to open the file as a show.

Depends on your version of PowerPoint. If the file is password protected,
then changing the extension will still not allow editing.

You can edit a PPS file the same as you would a PPT file. Remember -- the
only difference between a PPS and a PPT is the last letter of the file
extension. That letter tells PowerPoint which view to open the file in from
windows.

If you open PowerPoint first, then open the PPS, and the file is not
password protected, then yes you can edit the presentation.

Does this mean changing the extension will permit editing and normal
functions in PP?

Exactly. In fact, you can start PPT, choose File, Open and open the PPS
directly, just as though it were a PPT.

The only difference is the way PPT treats the file when you doubleclick its
icon.

Be careful with all this. You don't want to end up with two versions of your presentation if you didn't mean to.
