I recently decided to try and get Remote Assistance working so that I
can help out various friends and family instead of troubleshooting
over the phone all the time.

However, I don't use Outlook or MSN Messenger so I am forced to create
an Invitation File. That works fine.

I then e-mail it to someone so I can try it out and see what the
person on the other side sees. They get it. They're also using XP.
They attempt to open the file but there is no association so XP asks
what to open it with and there we're stuck.

What do they open it with????

Goes Remote Assistance also offer the ability to do a direct file
transfer if I have a file on my machine that I need to give them to
install a new program or fix to help them out? If so, how do you copy
from local to remote?

just create a shortcut to the following url on your
machine:

hcp://CN=Microsoft%
20Corporation,L=Redmond,S=Washington,C=US/Remote%
20Assistance/Escalation/Unsolicited/unsolicitedrcui.htm

you can open up the remote assistance session yourself.

just create a shortcut to the following url on your
machine:

I can open it just fine though it always responds with
"Remote Assistance connection could not be established. Please try
again."

I assumed this is because I'm going from my machine to my machine as a
test.

The other users can't open these at all.

I created a shortcut with the following but I'm told it's not a valid
Win32 program:

hcp://CN=Microsoft%
20Corporation,L=Redmond,S=Washington,C=US/Remote%
20Assistance/Escalation/Unsolicited/unsolicitedrcui.htm

I can't believe this is the best Microsoft can offer for this. It's
archaic.
