Mine has developed a nasty 'clunk' in the feed gears when scanning, which
results in a jagged line across the image. Either a gear has shed a tooth,
or some small bug has crawled in and got squished!

The case on these things does not have any obvious screws to undo but is
divided into two 'shells'. Has anyone managed to separate these, and if so
what's the trick? I don't want to force anything, and I'd like to fix the
problem - I'm too poor to buy something new!

If there are rubber feet, try prying them up and there may be a screw
under each one.

There are four rubber buffers (unit looks like it is designed to be
'stacked') but nothing under these.

Shame this isn't like many electronic items and have arrows pointing to the
relevant screws - takes the guess-work out of it!

Opened 'er up this morning. The trick seems to be you have to remove the
front panel first - it just clips into place. Then remove the two small
screws and washers on the SCSI plate at the back, and pivot the top and
bottom shells apart. Three hands are needed here.

Unfortunately, I doubt I'll get much further as the slide mechanism is
completely enclosed as a unit (like a DVD caddy), and all the gears are
within. Any attempt to dismantle further without detailed instructions would
almost certainly result in a trip to the wheelie bin!

Oh well...
