I have an NT 4 (SP6a) PDC. I have 1 W2k Server, and plan to add a second
W2K Server. I wish to make the second W2K Server the Domain Controller
for the Domain with AD. What steps are necessary to accomplish this?

Thanks.

You must upgrade the PDC of your NT 4 domain before making any windows 2000
server a DC or you will cause major conflicts. If you promote a 2k server
to being a DC, you will essentially create 2 PDCs in your domain.

Hi Steve,

There are several options you can do to upgrade or migrate
to windows 2000. For a presentation that is on the
internet for you you can look at the following resource.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;324601
For a very detailed guide on all the options we have the
domain cookbook. Chapter 2 covers the upgrade which is
the most common

The recommended steps

1. review the webcast metnioned above.

2. select your desired names space

3. install an nt 4 bdc and service pack

4. promote the box to pdc

5. install windows 2000 place sp 4 on the box. (can be
slipstreamed in on install)

6. the dcpromo using the name that you choose for your
dns. (please read the or listen to the webcase because we
go over most of hte commoon gottchas)

7. once you have dns configered correctly either via the
wizard or manually you can bring up the additional dc by
running the dcpromo from the start run command

The webcast will include most articles that you would need
to resolve most issues that you migt run across.
