Folks,
I'd like to network two computers. One has Windows2000
running office 2000 prof the other Wxp running windows xp-
prof. The w2000 machine is a Panasonic laptop with
~386mRam and 20GB harddrive, the other a 1GbMz Athalon
Desktop with 250Mb Ram and multiGB harddrive. The
machines are ~25 apart. The laptop accesses the internet
via a Zoom X4 ADSL modem, series 1011 connected to the
laptop via USB and has avail. an open ethernet port. The
desktop accesses the internet via dialup at this moment.
I'd like to have the two machines be able to share
data and a DSL connection.
How do I set this up with what devices. Please be
specific. I've never done this before.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Okay let's see......you have to decide which way you want to connect
them. If it is wireless then you have one set of options, wired is a
little different.
Wireless is thru the ADSL to a router then to each computer. Then you
would buy a wireless network card for the desktop, and the laptop if
you wanted to move around with it, and then both computers could be on
the net at the same time.
Wired just means that each computer or combination is hard wired to a
router. It can be either the laptop or the desktop or both that is
hardwired. Alot of wireless routers these days come with 4 wired ports
bult in, meaning that you can either go wireless OR wired OR BOTH in
the same box.
Brand doesn't mean anything unless you KNOW that a certain brand works
better or FEEL better using one brand over another. The network cards
do NOT have to be the same brand either, unless you are planning on
using their proprietary hi speed data processing. Some of that works,
some of it doesn't.
The advantage to a router is that you do NOT need to get another IP
address from your ISP for the second machine. It will connect thru the
same IP address as the current laptop. This will slow down your
throughput a little but not as much as you are now thinking.
I have 15 computers connected this way, a few more options are
invloved with my setup, and the throughput is not significantly
downgraded.

You could also get a crossover cable and do some ICS and do it that
way, but I think the router is easier and more flexable.
