Hello, we currently have 3 home PC's which are networked
and share internet access via a D-Link DSL-504 router.The
setup works great but does have one drawback, when we
want to print anything the PC which is physically
connected to the printer (parallel) has to be switched on
to enable the sharing function. We are using a HP deskjet
720c which although dated serves it purpose well.
Basically, what I want to know is there a cheap
alternative other than buying a specific printer with the
RJ45 connecter which I can incorparate into my network. I
have one spare RJ45 socket on my router.
Any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

You can purchase a 'print server' box.

These have a parallel connector on one end
which plugs into the printer, and an RJ45 on
the other end to hook to the network.

You can get these from many manufacturers.
Examples include HP JetDirect boxes.

You then set up the device with an IP address,
and then set up a TCP/IP printing port on the XP machines
to point to the JetDirect box.
( easy process, post back if you need a walk-through. )

Thankyou very much Ron for your time and advice on the
subject, I have now bought a " HP print server" and can't
wait to get it installed.
Thanks again.
