Donna

I took over someone else's computer, and would like to
move or rename the 'default' folder (where the subfolders
Application Data, Local Settings, Nethood, Start Menu,
etc, are found) to my own user folder under C:\Documents
and Settings.

I tried to rename the folder, but realized quickly that it
would not be a good idea. How do I transfer all the
settings to a different folder, and how do I delete the
old folder?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the Copy To function to mirror the profile. Create the new
account. Logon with the new account at least once. Then while logged on as
another user (with administrative rights) Control Panel|System|User
Profiles, select your olduser, Copy To, Browse to
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\newuser
Change "Permitted to use:" to "newuser" OK.

Thanks for the quick response.

I tried copying the old profile, but just before I hit the
final OK received a warning:

"C;\Documents and Settings\Donna already exists. The
current contents of this directory or this file will be
deleted during this operation. RU sure you want to
continue?"

I had already moved some application data and other
datafiles into the newuser directory, should I still go
ahead with the Copy operation?

You'll want to backup any files you want to save in \Documents and
Settings\Donna since everything will be overwritten. It's not clear why
you're doing this really. Why not just copy the files, etc. you need from
the old profile?

I would like to move everything over to C;\Doc &
Settings\Donna and delete the old default user directory,
where the system keeps putting things like Cookies, Web
History, and Settings for new applications that I'm
installing. The problem is, I have already copied a lot
of files over to the new folder, and I'm afraid that
they'll get clobbered when I copy over the new profile.

When I'm in the System Properties/User Profiles window,
there are only two user profiles - Administrator and
Donna. Will I be able to delete the Administrator profile
after the Copy To?

* Yes, this is correct.

* No you can not delete the built-in local administrator profile.
