Thankful for help

Hello I am hoping someone can please help me?
I have a new computer. A Dell which is running windows xp. I have an old
compter an e-machines which is running windows ME. I love my old computer and
the preloaded programs like microsoft works. I am giving my old computer to
my roomate. She has never use a computer before and wants to learn. This
older computer is loaded to the gills and is a great computer to start with.
On my dell it is pretty much bare. I want to transfer programs like microsoft
works to my new computer that are preloaded on the old computer. How if at
all can I do this?
I have Norton ghost I can use and an additonal external hard drive to use.
Also I would like to if possible update the old system with the XP from the
Dell.
This was also preloaded. Is that possible and if so could you please explain
how.
Thank you so very much in advance for any help you can provide.
Always greatful.

No, and no.

The ME system came with Works and it is very likely an OEM version of the
program and belongs to the e-machine forever and can't legally be
transferred to the Dell.

The OS also is, and always has been, one OS license for each computer (in an
OEM environment.)

The only programs you can uninstall and reinstall on the Dell are retail
versions of those programs that you purchased as an aftermarket purchase
such as Adobe products, retail Microsoft products, CD burning programs like
Nero or Roxio, etc.) Some of the programs purchased for the ME system may
not work with the XP Dell system anyhow.

You are pretty much out of luck with any of the preloaded software on the
e-machine.

You can not, for two reasons:

1. The licensng reason. You have a license to use the programs on a single
computer, not two. Moreover, if the programs came preloaded, their are OEM
versions, and the OEM versions are licensed for the origional machine only,
and not only not be copied to a new one, they can't even be moved.

2. The techical reason. All installed programs (except for a very rare very
small one) have many entries within \Windows pointing to them (in the
registry and elsewhere) as well as supporting files. All of that would be
lost if you tried toi transfer the programs and they wouldn't work. You can
transfer data files, but programs need to be reinstalled from the original
media.

No, it's not, and again for two reasons:

1. Same as number 1 above. It would be a licensing violation for the same
reasons.

2, It's highly unlikely that your old computer, from the Windows Me era,
will have anywhere near adequate enough hardware to provide acceptable
performance under Windows XP.
