I think that Microsoft erred in the changes that they made to the
"Documents" folder and it's usage. In XP there was the "My Documents" folder
where all or most user data went.
Now we have "C:\Users\" this is the main user data folder, where Contacts,
Documents, Favorites, Music, Pictures and other such files are stored. This
folder can not be moved, however, this is the folder that people think of
when they ask about moving it to a different drive or partition to protect
their data.
The answer usually given is that of moving the location of the, internal to
Users, Documents folder. Unless the op realizes that their other files are
not moved along with Documents, they are going to be in for a rude awakening
when they go to restore from a backup.
I've taken to backing up my entire Users folder to ensure I get everything
and whenever I install a program that saves important data I make sure that
the path is set to somewhere in "Users"
The practice of keeping data on another drive or partition is not as
important as it was with earlier operating systems being that Vista does not
"wipe" the drive, but moves all the old data files out of harms way before
installing itself.
I've done this several times with out any angst, and have been able to just
copy the files back to their prior locations.
Of course all this goes without saying that there is no substitute for a
good backup routine.
