you should have a system running as good as new.

Delete Temp files and cookies.

cookies (free)

Manually run program every few days or each week.
Or download Start Up Cop

This will become part of your start up programs.

Permanently remove unwanted programs:
Click:
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Delete programs and memory pigs
(You may want to create a system restore point before you
do this - see
below)

To get rid of "start up" programs.

Run
Type msconfig
Check off the programs you don't want to start up
(especially anything related to Real Player or Windows
Messenger)

defrag
overnight)

System restore
When things are running really good or before you attempt
something
major: Create a system restore point.
Click: Start-Program-Accessories-System Tools-Restore

Run Windows Update after restore point.

If updates create problems (they usually do), use
previous restore point

After all of that, visit
