I have found a way to get Microsoft Antispyware to run
correctly. (kind-of) I go to: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
AntiSpyware/ and double-left click all the bullseye-looking
icons. The last one you click should be
'GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe' and the program should run fine
until you shut it or your comp. down. Ya'll 'r welcome!

You've got a buggy install.

Try control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, change,
update.

Your workaround is useful, but shouldn't be necessary at all. I've got it
running on dozens of XP SP2 machines without this effort.
