How to make folders auto sort?

User folders that are built into Vista, like "Pictures" and "Downloads"
re-sort themselves, automatically and spontaneously, whenever they are
updated (i.e., as soon as I create a new sub-folder or drag an item into the
folder, the new item is inserted in the correct position according to the
sort order chosen for that folder).

Folders that I create myself do not exhibit this behaviour. When I drag new
items into my own miscellaneous folders, they land wherever I happen to drop
them; newly-created sub-folders are inserted at the very bottom of the
folder. To sort them, I have to refresh the folder. (Some folders do not
even re-sort themselves if I click out of them and then click back in --
making it very hard to find files or sub-folders I have added.)

I want ALL my folders to sort themselves spontaneously, immediately when
they're updated with a new item, just like Vista's built-in user folders do.
How can I change a folder's behaviour to do this?

Thought I'd bump this up since I haven't gotten a reply after three weeks.
I've also since noticed that some of the folders I've created do, after all,
re-sort themselves automatically whenever they're updated; other folders I've
created do not. It seems to be entirely arbitrary and it's very frustrating.

Please, someone must know what setting (Registry?, Desktop.ini?) controls
whether Vista automatically (and immediately) re-sorts a folder whenever it's
updated by adding a file or renaming an existing file ... and how to re-set
ALL folders to follow that behaviour.

Looking forward to hearing from some knowledgeable guru out there.
