How to make Contacts my address book?

I just installed a new Outllook 2003 Basic in a new XP. When I tried to
compose a new email message, I get a box which on its left side offers me to
"Type Name or Select from list" and on the right side shows "Show names from
the." with "Contacts" below it. However, the box is empty, so I can't choose
any recepients.

In my previous Outlook 2002 installation, that box would bring up my
Contacts, so I could choose to whom I want to send email. How can I make
Outlook show my Contacts so I can choose my email recepients? I will
appreciate advice.

I have the same issue and have tried to follow the directions on this link.
Under Contacts Properties...Outlook Address Book...I am unable to select the
option to "Show this folder as an email address book". The option font is
faded. Any ideas? Thanks

Read the article again. It's all there.
You just left out the part about adding the Outlook Address Book to your
profile.

Actually, it wasn't there originally, so I added it. I just confirmed that
it is still there and it is. When I attempt the second step: Properties,
Outlook Address Book, the Name of the Address Book is listed as Contacts,
which is correct, but it is faded as is the area to select SHow this folder
as email addess book.

You must be doing something differently than the article states.
It works for everyone else.
Did you restart Outlook after you added the Outlook Address Book Service?

Russ:
Thanks. That worked. However, one small problem is left over. When I start
to compose a new email, I click on the "TO" window. This brings up the
"Select names" left window. When I click on "Contacts" in the right window,
it is empty, with no addresses. However, below it, there is another listing
for "Contacts," which does indeed contain all of my potential addresses. How
do I get rid of the "Contacts" listing that contains no addresses, so I will
only have in that window the "Contacts" listing that does contain all of my
contacts. I will appreciate advice.

Thanks again. One more question, please: When I compose a new email, and

Smith. How can I make my contacts display in last name order, that is Smith,
John?

Sorry, Russ, I meant you, not "Paul"! I tried what you suggested with no
luck. Although my "sort order" is set as last name first, when I compose a
new email, and click "TO", my address book still comes up first name first.

Also, if I can throw another one at you, please:
How do a set a default phone number area code, so that when I create a new
contact, the phone number area code will automatically be set to "413"?
Thanks for your continuing responses, which I appreciate.

That means one of two things:
1. Your File As field is not set to "Last, First." You must have noticed
that "Last, First" is not an option for sorting in the Outlook Address Book
dialog. Only the File As... field is--so your File As field is what must be
in "Last, First" order.
2. You have not yet restarted Outlook to reflect the change you made.

Your default dialing location is an operating system setting. In Windows XP
it's in Control Panel > Phone and modem options...
