How to make autocomplete web addresses disappear?

I'm using Windows 2000, and I would like to delete individual
autocomplete entries for web addresses. I tried starting to type an
address, and several addresses pop down, and I highlighted one of them
and clicked delete on my keyboard, but it didn't work. I thought
that's the way it was supposed to work, but it doesn't.

Is there a way to delete just one autocomplete entry? I know how to
delete all of them (I have a shareware program that does that well!).
But I would like to delete just one entry at a time. Does anyone know
how to do this? Highlighting the entry when it drops down in internet
explorer, and then hitting delete, doesn't seem to work.

Thanks,
Darlita

To clear individual URLS from the address line you need to either edit the
registry (not recommended unless you know what you're doing) or use a
third-party utility like

It depends on the source.

Bosconian has shown you how to delete any of the 25 items
which you might see when you press F4. So if the one you
are interested in is *only* found there you may be successful
with that method. However, notice that that list can easily be
modified simply by adding 25 other items by entering them
in the Address bar. E.g. entering about:1 through about:25
would change them all to something more innocuous.

That's right. You have to delete them at their source.
The most common source is the History special folder.
That source does have a Delete function available for each
item and even for each group of items. The problem is that it is
not very reliable. I have speculated that perhaps its lack of reliability
could be associated with a need to do some recursive processing
in order to remove all possible instances of a site's name.
In that case I have suggested that users try emulating the necessary
recursion and do the deletions in order of oldest and smallest class
(e.g. URLs from the 3 weeks ago list) first. I'm not sure what the
implementation is for their containers (e.g. the site name "subfolders")
so you would have to test whether it was even safe to delete them
at the same time or whether it was necessary to delete all URLs first
and only then try deleting their containers. So far, nobody has bothered
reporting whether they have had any luck with the idea. I'm not really
interested in finding out what the scope of it is; although I have proved
that deleting entries which have not propagated into any of the previous
days "subfolders" may be successful. YMMV.

Good luck
