How to make a template automatically assign a number

My boss has informed me of a new project. She wants me to create a Word or
Excel template to place on the server so multiple employees can access it and
fill out the form with new client information. I would like to find out if
it is possible to create the form/template so that each time someone opens it
to add information it will automatically assign a new client number on the
form for the next person entering information. I am using MSWord 2000.

This is neither a WORD nor an EXCEL newsgroup. this is an ACCESS newsgroup.
Post to the group for the software you will be using. Does not sound like
you plan to use Microsoft Access.
