I am a beginner in word 2003 how do i lock a document so that everytime i try
to open it that i have to put in a pass word each time

Tools | Options | Security: Password to open. Do not do this unless you are
absolutely positive you will remember the password. If you use even a
reasonably strong password, there is virtually no way you or anyone else
will be able to open the doc without it.

You clicked OK in the dialog and then saved the document, closed it, and
tried to reopen?
