how to load java...for playing yahoo game's.cribbage.chess etc.

we have window'sxp professional my husband and I have
tried for hrs to load java for internet game playing.When
we start downloading JAVA PLUG-IN on Sun's web site. It
start's downloading and then STOP'S.Can someone help us
here. We are so very green at this..Please answer
