It was working fine since last time I used the pc, now I'm able to ping it
from another computer, but if I go in network place and try to browse the
network an alert says me that I've unsufficient authorization.

Since I've not changed anything, this let me think to some hardware failure.
But it's an integrated nic. What do you think.

What could be the cause and what can I check?

Thanks
Andre

Spyware may be blocking the network access or the firewall settings?

Hello Yves,
Spyware may be blocking the network access or the firewall settings?

The Windows firewall is off since the machine is just LAN connected when
needed.
There is an antivirus. I tried to uninstall it but nothing changed. Cleaned
the netbios cache,
verify the network settings, tried to add lmhosts and hosts file, change
the ip.

The only things that seems take some effect has been change the computer
workgroup name.
At least now I'm able to see my computer workgroup without error.

That's a strange situation.

Andrea, why don't you try rt clicking MyComputer>select
Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>Network Adapters.
Expand and see if there's a yellow mark next to your NIC. If yes, rt
click and reinstall the NIC driver. If no, then
rt click and choose uninstall. Restart and let XP reinstall the NIC.

No yellow icon, tried to reinstall, no results.

Spywares are not in the virus category and most anti-virus utilities do not
clear these out. You need an antispyware solution to remove spywares.

Tried to change the workgroup name to the other pc ... now the working one
wasn't able to see the network as the other ...

What's happening ??

It's outside all rules that one working things stops to work without an apparent
reason that doesn't seem to be hardware failure.

Well I don't believe that could be a spyware problems but let it have a check
tomorrow.

Thanks.

It Could be a dead nic, It does happen. You can find a PCI nic and plug
it in, see if it works.

10/100 NICs cost like $4 online, just buy another one and see what happens.

Hello John,

Here in italy they cost more than 4$ ... but I've 3 Nic in my stock ... unboxed
one, installed,
but the problem is still there.

In this case I got a little improvement, that also with the on board nic
I got after reinstalling the driver,
I'm able to see the local workgroup wiht just the pc that is trying to connect.

Always able to ping other pc, but not to browse.

Netbios over tcp is enabled ... I really don't understand.

Any other suggestion?

Bye Andrea

P.S. Good Easter

Always able to ping other pc, but not to browse.
Did it work before? (I don't remember)

Can you access shared resources on the other computer by using UNCs
directly, such as mapping a drive letter to \\servername\resource\ ?

Yes it has worked fine since two weeks ago. No this is the main problem.
I can ping them but not
resolve by UNC.

Solved with a stupid protocol delete/reinstall ... it was the last chance.
Never happened
before.
