How to know if my Product Key is definitely valid

I've pursued this for a while and still haven't gotten
a definite answer, so let me ask it differently: I
installed XP from a CD and passed registering and
activating and validating. Updated with SP2, did
Windows Update, installed the new Windows Update,
passed that test, then installed forty-odd Windows
Updates (but in Custom mode to avoid one particular
AC97 update which my PC can't work with).
Everything appears to be in order, and valid. I am
in the process of tediously installing the 20-odd
applications and all the data files which I need.

Is this a case of the "duck" test? If it looks like a
duck, and walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.....
then it's a duck?

Maybe it is me but I can't make any sense out of what you are asking. To me
the topic line and question don't seem to be connected. What is a Duck Test?
And what is doing the quacking? You installed XP or reinstalled XP to avoid
one update? Now something it wrong? Why would you question your validation
of the legally provided product key? Are you presented with reason to doubt
this installation that I can not see by reading between the lines? If you
provide a valid question maybe there will be a valid answer.

Sorry.

You didn't mention which version (there are many) of
XP you installed and from whence it came into your posession.
If you are the "first" person to use the key and go through
full validation you should have no trouble in the future.
Because of M$ complicated licensing rules you may or may
not be legal since you didn't provide enough details.

later.....

Sorry somebody didn't understand the joke involving
the 'duck' test. Most people would.

I thought I provided specific information on which to
base my question. I put it through all of the
checks on the way to completion, is all I can say.

'Version'? It's some kind of XP-Pro,
pre-SP1. It's unmarked except for Product Key, and I'll
just drop the issue. If it keeps working, maybe that
answers the question.

Lets see if this program will work. It finds the product key for the
installed product
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
