Tom

I am trying to intall Windows XP O/S. I am currently
running Windows 98 and I have the Windows XP disk. I come
to a prompt regarding partitions. There are 2 options:
One is 275 MB and one is 18 GB. I assumed that I want to
choose the larger but it then says I cannot install it
over 98 and to go to
www.microsoft.com/windows/multiboot.asp. However, I want
to remove 98 completely rather than having both. Do I
choose the 275 MB option or have I skipped a step? Do I
have to remove 98 first? If so, how? Thanks in advance.

Tom,

Do yourself a favour, stick with 98 ( see my post "I Hate XP but please
read on" )
xp is totally ****ed with security holes the size of dad's Buick and just
unstable.
Has anyone who is reading this ever not had blue screen death or a reboot
w/xp?
I found xp to be a total nightmare

ps did you notice that there are 65,000 messages in this group? doesn't that
tell you something?

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

2. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

3. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
4. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
5. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

6. Clean Install Windows XP

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

WARNING: if you have an UPGRADE cd, which is likely, then you'll need to
provide proof of ownership of a previous version of windows (Win98 or
later) in order to do the clean install. SOME [but not all] manufacturer
"system restore" CD's will NOT qualify, but a genuine retail MS version
will. if the root of the cd has an i386 folder then it most likely will
qualify. just insert it when asked by the XP setup and cross your
fingers!
