Friend foolishly opened an attachment and finds he is well and truly
infected.
He's identified the Worm - Netsky - and Symantec Norton AntiVirus do a fix
for it but he now can't boot up Windows nor log-on line to download and
install the fix....
Is there anyway around this?
I could download the file for him and send it to him on floppy...but how to
proceed from there?
Thanks.

Do they have a backup on-demand AV such as F-Prot they can run from the hard
drive?

try going to booddisk.com & get the DOS boot files, may fit on a floppy,
then get the netskys (multiple versions) from pspl & ha should be fine.

One approach is the F-Pup download from my web site. He would have to
have access to a working Win 9X/ME PC. Then d/l F-Pup and run it.
Choose to create the 3 disk emergency boot disk set on that clean PC.
Then use these disks on the ailing PC. It uses F-Prot for DOS which is
a very good antivirus scanner.

Is there a computer that they can use to download an update version of
McAfee Stinger and burn it to a CD to run on the infected computer?

It's always a good idea to have a DOS based backup AV for situations like
this, where they can't get access to the Internet, or their active AV won't
kill the bug from Windows.

Then get a burned copy, he already paid for it so whats the problem....

So if I loan him my W98 or burn a copy will he be able to use it to log on
would you know in these circumstances?
What happens at the mo when he tries to boot up:-
"Yes, I get the first Windows98 screen, then the boot info on a blackscreen,
then this is replaced by a black screen with just a flashing dash in top
left corner. the Hard drive goes quiet"

With Win 98 the same serial # can be on many pc's, they didn't start
serial tracking until XP.

It will depend on a lot if the regular WIN 98se CD will work properly.
Some things you may have to get are:
motherboard cd, a lot of drivers, for modem, video, sound.
If it's a Compaq, dell, HP, or Gateway you are going to have problems.

Don't often post...however just dealt with this tonight. Start computer in
safe mode, run msconfig, uncheck startup entry for winlogon, this is an
infected entry, not the true winlogon, doublecheck the true winlogon is in
system 32. Anyway once in Windows run your scanner.
