How to install updated version

Several attempts to install the new version of Windows Defender failed when
selecting the "Run" option from the download. However, it installed with no
problem at all by doing the following:

1. Exit WindowsDefender. i.e. stop the application from running.
2. Download the WindowsDefender.msi file to a local directory on your
computer.
3. Install from the local directory.

Thanks - these steps should not be necessary. However, it IS necessary to
close the open Windows Defender UI (in which you initially pressed
"download")--in order for the new install to proceed. The installation UI
should tell you this--just closing Defender via the red X and hitting
continue (?) in the installation dialogs should work.

Thanks, but I did that the second time I tried to install it and it failed.
Maybe the steps I described should not be necessary, but exiting Windows
Defender, downloading the .msi file to a local directory, then executing it
from the local directory is the only way I could get the installation to work.

Anybody else have problems installing WD using the download "Run" option?

I was glad you posted those steps, because I agree that they will help
others--didn't mean to imply otherwise. I've only updated two systems via
that prompt so far, and I didn't have the issues you did--but I agree that
your method should work if problems arise in this process.

I had a similar problem and resolved it as CurtB did. I suspect I know the
reason:
During the install of WD, I was instructed to close all IE windows, which I
did. I have the option set in IE to clean up all temporary files on closing.
I suspect that when you "directly run" the WD install, it uses the IE
temporary files folders and some of the install files got deleted when I
closed IE. When you "save" the installer elsewhere, that doesn't happen.
I also obviously agree with Bill Cube that it shouldn't happen!

I think Jack has identified the problem. I also had the IE option set to
clean up temporary files on closing.

Thanks very much, Jack and CurtB--I suspect this is one of those instances
in which these groups provide valuable insights to the developers--I'll make
sure this gets noticed.

Thanks very much for that confirmation. I'm scratching my head about how to
fix this one, and don't see the answer immediately--I'll just wish the folks
in Redmond good luck! (and maybe hope that if they write a KB it is easy to
find.)
