Subject: How to install new hard drive XP
Newsgroups: wendy:microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support

Greetings:

Inspiron 5100 Lap Top

Have the new hard drive and Operating System CD

Anyone know the step-by-step process for changing the drives?

I've already backed up my C drive using Retrospect Express.

Thanks

Wendy

Remove the drive cage from the computer, remove the drive from the cage.
Insert new drive into cage. Insert cage into computer. Put XP CD into CD
drive. Boot computer from CD and follow onscreen instructions to install
the OS to the computer. Activate Windows. Install any chipset or other
drivers needed to make Windows and all devices properly. Make sure firewall
is turned on, update Windows. Install and update all other programs needed.

See this web site for more information on clean installing XP

Wendy:
It's not entirely clear (at least to me) as to precisely the information you
want.

If you're basically asking how to *physically* remove the hard drive in your
Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop and install a new HD, then access the service
manual for your laptop at:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/index.htm#online_documentation

Take a look at the section on Hard Drive which contains instructions for
removing the old HD and installing a new HD.

As I say, I'm not sure if this is really your question or whether you want
information on transferring the contents of your old drive to the new one.
If you need more info, please be as detailed as possible describing your
precise interest(s) in terms of what exactly you want to do and provide
details as to your current situation.

*LAPTOP*. There's probably no drive cage.

Note that not all desktops have removeable cages anyway.

Well, when I replaced a laptop HD I used Partition Magic to copy all
the data to the new drive in an external case and then swapped the
drives. It saved a day reinstalling everything.

I don't know your laptop to know where the drive is hiding. They can
be a bit hidden--when I did mine I ended up having to google for the
location of the drive. (Turns out I had actually seen it but it was
hiding under a metal divider and I didn't realize what I had seen.)

Actually, many, but not all, of the laptops I have worked on have the drive
installed in a frame, cage if you will, that is then screwed into the
machine. Protects the circuit board from being touched when the case is
opened or the drive is pulled out of the machine.

I've seen them installed in a removeable tray but that seems to be a
thing of the past. All recent ones I've looked at had it buried
somewhere, never in anything like a drive cage from a desktop. I have
seen a protective housing directly around the drive but nothing like
the cages some desktops have.
