I've recently purchased a dvd drive to replace the cd one that was
originally in my L2000E laptop. Unfortunately, I can't see how to
remove the cd drive and install the dvd one. There are no obvious
buttons or catches under the laptop. Any advice out there? Cheers.

Try using your favorite search engine, and terms like
"laptop disassembly". You may find manuals that suggest
typical disassembly sequences for laptop computers. For
example, this manual:

You could try phoning Asus tech support, and see if they
have any disassembly manuals for their products. I don't
see any on the download site.

Perhaps looking at the new drive will tell you how many
screws are used to secure the drive, or whether the
electrical connector on the drive is part of the mechanical
support etc ?

Here is the disassembly of another Asus model. I hope
yours isn't this complicated:

If there isn't an obvious "pod" or "bay" on the unit, the
implication is that some amount of disassembly will be
required.
