Bob

I should know how to do this by now.

I gpot a used Canon Multipass MP730 printer, and wanted to install it
(on a friend's computer).

It didnt' come with a CD`so I went to the Canon page
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...categoryid=238&modelid=9035#DownloadDetailAct

and selected winxp and got two driver entries

1) MultiPASS MP730 MultiPASS Suite Ver.500a for Windows XP
mp730mpsuite500a27u-01winusz.exe
ver 500a 30.27 MB 04/07/2010

and

2) MP730 MP Driver Ver. 5.0 updater (Windows XP/2000)
mp730udxp50en.exe
ver 5.0 0.15 MB 10/04/2007

and dl'd both of them. The first one is 30MB and the second 150K,
and my friend never does anything fancy, and is very conservative
about software, and she don't need no stinkin' suite, so I only tried
to install the second one. Was that my mistake?

Anyhow, when I ran the program, it asked me to agree to the terms of
service and then said roughly, no update necessary.

So I figured that meant XP already had the driver installed, but when
I went to Add New Printer and I looked at the list of printer drivers
under Canon, it wasn't there. When I chose Browse, it was only
willing to accept an .inf file, which I figure was on the CD, or
somewhere int the .exe files I dl'd, but I don't know where.

Do I have to innstall MultiPASS MP730 MultiPASS Suite Ver.500a for
Windows XP mp730mpsuite500a27u-01winusz.exe ? or is my solutoin
elsewhere?

While I'm here, does she want

3) Easy-WebPrint Ver. 2.6.4 (Windows XP/2000/Me/98)
ewpwin264en.exe ver. 2.6.4 1.92 MB 03/12/2010

or 4) Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 3.0.7 (Windows 7/7
x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/2000)
eppexwin307en.exe ver 3.0.7 41.96 MB 02/18/2010

or 5) MP Toolbox Ver. 4.1.1.0 (Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000/Me/98)
MP700_730MPToolbox4110mp01WINEN.EXE
ver 4.1.1.0 4.04 MB 10/08/200

For example, is number 4 essential to print a picture, or is it only
used for touching up pictures, which, I'll ask her but I think she
will never do that. Does she have to have number 3 to prin t a
webpage, and do I want number 5 the Toolbox to fix something?

Will the Toolbox do anything with my much older Canon printers?

With most people I could just install them and see, but she will
complain no end, even though I'm doing her a big favor with all this.

Thanks a lot.

While I'm here, does she want

Thank you but unless you want to, don't worry abou this part of my
question. Clever guy that I am, I googled these three things and I
don't think she'll never use this stuff. I might, miaybe, but it's
not my printer. Although I do have a Canon BJ200 and BJC2000!!!

Would they work with such old printers?

Yes, that was probably a mistake. I'd expect an "updater" to look at the
version number of the currently installed driver, check Canon's web-site
to see if a later version is available, and if so, download and install it.

Anyhow, when I ran the program, it asked me to agree to the terms of
service and then said roughly, no update necessary.

If the driver isn't already installed, the updater might draw that
conclusion.

I would install the suite.

I didn't know they did all that. I guess they didn't used to. Cool.

Okay, I looked again and those above were the only two entries under
drivers. But after sections called Software, Firmware (empty),
Software Apps and Upgrades (long), there is another section called
Windows Drivers! It's even longer and not followed by Mac drivers.

So there are two sections called drivers and they're not next to each
other. Fooled me. :) Thanks for making me look again.
If the driver isn't already installed, the updater might draw that
conclusion.
Okay.

I would install the suite.

I will if some thing doesn't work, after reading the owner's manual.

Those other 4 Canon programs I first mentioned I googled and they had
to do with tool bars for IE to make printing a photor or webpage easy,
and even the toolbox seemed very specific. But I didn't find any
helpful info so far on the "Suite".

But this will be enough for now. Thanks a lot.

BTW, I'm the same as Bob. I was using someone else's computer.
Everyone already knew that, right?

One more question.

Under documentation/manuals there is a download called
Multipass_730_700_Software_Guide_EN.exe .

I executed this on my other computer on purpose, and by accident on
this one. It runs, displays a progress box that just displayed
increasing percentages, stops, and the box dissappears with no
message. It doesn't make an icon anywhere or an entry in the list of
programs or in the control panel. And not in Add or Remove Hardware.

What do you think it does? What is an exectuable software guide?
Wasn't in the FAQ. The manual makes reference to a software guide but
says it's a pdf file! I don't have the printer at my house, but it
didn't complain about that.

Thanks.
