When I add more than 10 computers to a network without
using a dedicated server, W2000 restricts the number of
useres to 10. Under W98 this was not limited.

How do I increase the User Group Limit ot more than 10
Users, say to 20 users.

The 10 computer limit is actually a 10 connection limit. A Windows NT
Workstation, Windows 2K Pro, Win XP Pro machine can accept no more than 10
connections at a time. To get around this you have a few options depending
on what your users are accessing:

1. Get a cheap NAS box
2. Run a Linux Server
3. Run a Win9x/Me PC
4. Upgrade to Server version of Windows

Option 1 is the simplest to implement. Followed by Option 3. Windows 98/Me
is unsecure and unreliable (you've been warned ;-) )
I have no comment on Option 2.
Option 4 is the way to go if your company/workgroup is only getting bigger.
Most expensive route though. So much you can do with a Server OS though. . .

Good Luck

20 users really does justify a small server.

We received a flyer recently with HP knocking department servers out at
299 GBP (knowing the normal rates of exchange for goods I imagine that
would equate straight to 299 USD!)

Ad onto that a copy of Win2K server and your have the start of a
scaleable, more secure environment
