I am operating Windows XP Home Edition.

I have 512K of RAM Memory

How can I find the type of RAM Memory Installed on my computer?

How can I find out if my RAM Memory is defective?

My computer freezes up or states that I have insufficient memory.

I only open 1 or 2 applications at a time.

To identify your hardware, including the RAM, use one of these free
system inventory programs:

To test your RAM, I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously, you
have to get the program from a working machine. You will either
download the precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or
the .iso to make a bootable cd. If you want to use the latter, you'll
need to have third-party burning software on the machine where you
download the file - XP's built-in burning capability won't do the job.
In either case, boot with the media you made. The test will run
immediately. Let the test run for an hour or two - unless errors are
seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.

With Windows XPs highly efficient page file mechanism, there is little
relationship between RAM and the message regarding insufficient memory.
Start out by deleting temporary internet files, removing malware, spyware,
trojans, viruses and browser hijackers.
