How to I point my pictures to a different drive?

Hi,

I added a new hard drive to my girlfriends' computer because she ran out of
space. Most of the space was from the pictures she takes using her digital
camera. Before reformatting and reinstalling the OS on the old drive, I
copied all the pixs to the new drive. The reformat was just a routine
overhaul. It's been in service about a year and a half so I cleaned it up
while I had it. Everything is working fine.

Is there a way to have XP use the new drive as the default place for her "My
Pictures" directory? I'm pretty sure there is, but rooting around in the
control panal didn't lead me to where you can do that. No help with a
google search either, so I thought I 'd post here.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and of course, thanks in advance
for any replys.

Hi Ted,

Currently there is no way to change just the location of the My Pictures
location. However, you can change the location of the parent folder My
Documents which will also move My Pictures storage location.

You can do this by doing the following:

Right click My Documents, select Properties. On the target tab it will show
your My Documents location.
Change your target location to your other hard drive.
Click Ok.

From this point, all your My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music will be
stored on the second drive. You can copy the pictures from the 2nd drive
into the new My Pictures folder.

Hope this helps.

This is what I did.
I selected "My Pictures"
Then selected "Move"
Then my D: drive, a partition on my hard drive, moving My Pictures from my C
to D drive.
Works perfectly. At least so far! Is this OK?

You can do that but why, create a new folder in my documents,go to
my pictures,edit,select all,a drop-down menu will appear,select move all,
move them to new folder,L.click new folder, move to the 2nd hd for storage.
Also selecting in view,"list" instead of icon or showing the picture cuts down
on the load on the system. After youve moved them,R.click the folder, create
a shortcut, move that back to desired location in C: for quick access.

Hi Nico,

It worked like a charm! It was the right click on properties, etc., that I
missed.
Thanks again.

Hi Yves,

Your way works, too! But I used the other one where you move the whole My
Docs folder to the other drive. That way, if I have to reload the operating
system on the first drive, all the documents are already safe on the other
one.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the explaination. I especially appriciate the trick of turning
on the details list. It speeded up a lot.

No problem Ted. Happy to help.
