I have a document that has index form fields that I want to hide from anyone
who views the document. I don't want any user to be able to see any
formatting marks or hidden text regardless of their viewing options.

This is not possible for a Word document. You could convert it to PDF,
however.

I think that your only option, then, is to create a PDF to give to your
users. No matter how you lock the document, password protect it, etc., the
user can always click the ¶ button in his toolbar and see formatting marks
and hidden text.

Sorry, but what you want others to see in their copy of Word is
generally immaterial. You could try to control it with a macro, but
there is (deliberately) no way to force others to allow the macro to
run.

The only feasible solution is to publish the document as PDF, which
doesn't support any formatting marks or hidden text, and never allow
others to access the original Word document.
