Check your monitor for 'secret panels' and/or a knob
labeled "brightness". - RM
 
If you are talking about your CRT (cathode ray tube) the controls should be
on the front of your monitor inside an access door or buttons on the front.
 
I think other posters to this thread have already given you the correct
answer - regarding your MONITOR, not your CPU. So I'll just give you the
correct nomenclature:

A CPU is the Central Processing Unit, the brains of your computer. It plugs
onto a motherboard socket, and these days it will (or better) have a cooling
fan attached.

A MONITOR (sometimes referred to as a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) is the device
that looks like a TV set and provides the user with necessary displays.
