How to hide a hit counter?

If you mean the FP one, you can't really.

Unless you make custom images, and make the colours the same as the
background of the page. (eg white background, white digits/images).
Then you look up the counts in the _private folder (or whereever it writes
the file to).

There are plenty of hit counter solutions out there that count silently in
the background without the intrusive digits like the FP counter.

Do you really want a hit counter for people to see how busy your site is or
do you want to see how many people have visited just for yourself.

if the later then maybe consider www.sitemeter.com

thats what I use on my personal website (and my blog here
http://deancollinsblog.blogspot.com/ )

the free service works great.
